What is the Future of Work?

We are in an era of increased connectivity, robotics and cognitive tools that is changing the nature of work, new talent models, AI and the gig economy are reinventing jobs. Now is the time to reimagine why, where and how work gets done. For the hospitality and tourism sector, the changes could be significant. At the heart of service are people, but whether robots can replace people is a question which raises many uncertainties.  This webinar, brought to you by ⁠Hotel Management School Leeuwarden about the future of work, brings together three though leaders who will unravel many of those issues from AI to front line operations from intended to unintended consequences.

Should there be a future for frontline service work in tourism and hospitality?
Professor Tom Baum (Strathclyde University)Over the past 25 years, discussions on the future of frontline service work in tourism and hospitality have highlighted the impacts of demographic changes, geopolitical events, technological evolution, and the climate crisis, focusing on employment in the gig economy, dignified work, AI implications, and the social consequences for youth and marginalized communities, raising important questions about the social value and purpose of frontline service work.
Is technology a substitute for labour? 
Prof. Ian Yeoman (Hotel Management School Leeuwarden)Using New Zealand as a case study, a scenario planning methodology engaged tourism stakeholders in an Industry Transformation Plan (ITP), creating four scenarios that explore technological substitution modes and raise key questions about the future of labor and sustainability in tourism.
AI and the future of talent management in tourism and hospitality
Georges El Hajal (Hotel Management School Leeuwarden)This presentation explores AI integration’s impact on talent management in tourism and hospitality through scenario planning and Dator’s Alternative Futures Framework, raising key questions about balancing AI with human roles, ethical considerations, and the necessity of ongoing education and skill development.
